Restoring Order
Date Your Spouse: Why We Schedule Time to “Restore Order”
Life has a way of pulling us in a hundred different directions.
Work demands our attention. The house needs cleaning. The bills need paying. Before long, we find ourselves operating more like business partners managing a household than a husband and wife building a life together. Can anyone relate?
That’s why we have a phrase in our marriage:
Restore Order.
Whenever life starts to feel chaotic, disconnected, or overwhelming, we know it’s time to intentionally reconnect. Sometimes that means a dinner date. Sometimes it’s a long drive. Sometimes it’s just a quiet conversation on the back porch.
The activity itself isn’t the point.
The connection is.
Marriage Doesn’t Thrive on Leftovers
One of the biggest misconceptions about marriage is that love will simply sustain itself. The truth is that relationships require attention, intentionality, and investment.
Most couples would never expect a friendship to flourish without spending time together, yet many marriages are expected to survive on brief conversations between responsibilities.
Dating your spouse is more than going out to eat.
It’s creating space to remember why you chose each other in the first place.
It’s stepping away from the daily demands long enough to see one another again, not just as parents, coworkers in the family business, or managers of a busy household, but as husband and wife.
Dreaming Together Matters
One of our favorite parts of these “Restore Order” moments is dreaming together.
Where are we headed?
What do we want our family to look like in five years?
What goals are we pursuing individually and together?
What needs our attention right now?
When life gets busy, it’s easy to spend all of our conversations discussing logistics. Who’s picking up the kids? What’s for dinner? Did you pay that bill?
Those conversations are necessary, but they aren’t enough.
Healthy marriages need vision.
They need shared goals.
They need regular opportunities to step back from the urgent and focus on what matters most.
We Are Better as a Team
When we make time to reconnect, we’re reminded that we’re on the same side.
Marriage isn’t meant to be two people pulling in different directions. It’s a partnership built on shared purpose.
Sometimes our date nights help us celebrate victories. Other times, they help us solve problems. Occasionally, they reveal conversations we’ve been avoiding because life has been moving too fast.
No matter what, we usually leave feeling more aligned, more connected, and more prepared to face whatever comes next.
That’s what restoring order does.
It brings us back to the same page.
An Invitation for This Week
You don’t need an elaborate weekend getaway.
You don’t need a fancy restaurant.
You don’t need a perfectly planned evening.
You simply need intentional time together.
Put it on the calendar.
Protect it.
Ask meaningful questions.
Dream about the future.
Talk about your goals.
Laugh.
Reconnect.
Because a strong marriage isn’t built by accident. It’s built one conversation, one date, and one intentional moment at a time.
And sometimes, all it takes is a little time to restore order.
